Wexford - Waterford

Current Status

The Wexford - Waterford rail line had passenger services suspended in 2010 during the Global Financial Crisis.

At the time, most of the track was over 100 years old and had not been upgraded.

The line has been continuously maintained by Iarnród Éireann since then and annually used by maintenance trains.

What’s possible?

Restoring the 60km route including the Killinick-Felthouse Junction curve (allowing a direct Wexford-Waterford journey without going through Rosslare Strand) is feasible and would deliver a journey time of Wexford O’Hanrahan to Waterford Plunkett in 55 minutes. You can see the details in our report here:

Reviving the Wexford South Station at the new Trinity Wharf Development would give a Wexford South to Waterford Plunkett journey of 45 minutes.

Reviving the rail line also allows for significant freight traffic at the thriving Rosslare Europort.

What are the next steps?

Restore the rail line to it’s historical 70mph / 112 kmph speed limit and modernise the railway.

Long Term Goals

South East On Track’s eventual goal is an all-day hourly Wexford-Waterford service extended on to Galway & Limerick, allowing transfers to Cork at Limerick Junction.
